Deadline for Rail Transit Art Program Extended Until June 27

The deadline for professional artists to submit their qualifications for the Honolulu rail transit art program has been extended an additional week due to strong interest from artists.

The new deadline requires artists to submit their qualifications by 7:59 p.m. Hawaii Standard Time on June 27.  Local artists requested more time during a pre-submittal workshop last Saturday sponsored by HART that detailed the submission and procurement process. Nearly 200 people attended the non-mandatory workshop.

The $5-million transit art program will highlight and display site-specific work created by artists and integrated into the facility design at the 21 stations along the rail route and at the train control center in Waipahu.

"By popular demand, we are extending the deadline for artists. We want to be responsive to feedback and to encourage as many submissions as possible," said HART Executive Director and CEO Dan Grabauskas. "The program is an excellent opportunity for artists to showcase their talent through artwork that reflects the history and character of the communities where our stations are located."

Professional artists or artist teams are being asked to submit their qualifications and demonstrate their understanding and knowledge of Hawaii's history, culture and traditions. Station artwork opportunities will range from paving and floor designs to wall murals, grille work and architectural fencing, to glass work and integrated sculptural elements.
